A Random Walk Down Wall Street

Author Burton G. Malkiel · Money & investing

Our take

First published 1973 and repeatedly revised, by Princeton economist Burton Malkiel. Our take: its core claim hasn't changed in fifty years — most active stock-picking can't beat the market; for ordinary people, low-cost index funds are the rational choice. Its roasts of technical and fundamental analysis still read deliciously; but remember, its conclusion is "fiddle less", not "get rich guaranteed".

Who it is for

For investing beginners being led around by gurus; also for those wanting to grasp the efficient-market hypothesis. Not for tip-seekers — this book will talk you out of that.

Three key ideas

  1. Random walk: short-term price moves are near-random; forecasters barely beat coin flips.
  2. Costs are certain: active funds' fees deduct every year while excess returns don't — low-cost index funds win long-term.
  3. Lifecycle allocation: take more risk young, turn conservative with age; allocation should shift over time.

How to read it

First half is theory and history (the bubble stories are great); second half is the practical allocation guide. Beginners can start with the practical chapters, then backfill theory.

FAQ

Does the efficient-market hypothesis mean "no research needed"?

No. It means public information is already in prices and excess returns are brutally hard to sustain; allocation and cost control remain your homework.

A 1973 book — still relevant?

The core conclusion holds; new editions cover ETFs and behavioural finance. Read the latest revised edition.

Are index funds really for everyone?

For *most* ordinary people. A minority with skill, time and discipline can go active — but the book's data shows how hard that road is.
