How to choose a book worth finishing

Most people buy books from recommendations and end up with shelves of unfinished ones. We suggest the reverse: start by writing down the question you want answered, then let the book answer it. The more specific the question, the easier it is to judge whether a book deserves your time.

Step 1: Write the question as one sentence

Not "I want to learn investing" but "How can an ordinary employee start investing without quitting their job?" A sharp question lets you compare authors: does this book offer evidence, background, practical method, or a new perspective? If it can't answer your question, its fame doesn't matter — it's not for you right now.

Step 2: Sample before you buy

Check the table of contents and sample chapters for the author's style, depth, and whether the language or translation suits you. The right topic can come in the wrong edition — a clumsy translation, heavy abridgement, or dated examples. Ten minutes of sampling beats ten recommendation lists.

Step 3: Verify the edition

Compare author, publisher, publication year, translator, language, format and ISBN. One book often has several Chinese translations with very different translators; originals come as paperback, hardcover or audiobook. For cross-border orders, factor in shipping, delivery time and returns; for ebooks, check account region and territorial rights.

Step 4: Keep your own notes

After each chapter, note one useful idea, one question to chase, and one method to try. Separate the author's claims from your own takeaways; look up primary sources or counterarguments for important claims. Notes don't need to be pretty — they need to be useful.
