Our take

Published in 1956 by Frankfurt School psychologist Erich Fromm. Our take: its most disruptive line is that modern people treat love as a problem of *being loved* rather than a capacity *to love*. Love here isn't a feeling but an art to be learned and practised — no different in essence from learning carpentry. Seventy years on, the diagnosis is still uncomfortably accurate.
