Nonviolent Communication
Author Marshall B. Rosenberg · Relationships
Our take
Published in 1999 by clinical psychologist Rosenberg, introducing the four NVC components: observation, feeling, need, request. Our take: it's often mistaken for a "speaking skills" book, but it works at a deeper level — separating evaluation from observation, tracing emotions back to needs. The techniques take three days to learn; honestly facing your own needs can take much longer.
Who it is for
For couples, parents, or workplace communicators stuck in circular arguments; also for managers who give feedback. Not for readers hunting for winning lines in fights.
Three key ideas
- Four components: observation (fact without evaluation) → feeling → need → concrete, doable request.
- Separate observation from evaluation: "you're late" is observation, "you're irresponsible" is evaluation — the latter ends the conversation on arrival.
- Behind anger is an unmet need; address the need before the emotion.
How to read it
Take a recent argument transcript and rewrite what you said using the four components. You'll find most conflicts stall before step two.

▶ YouTubeFAQ
Does NVC mean suppressing emotions to speak nicely?
The opposite. NVC asks you to honestly name feelings and needs rather than suppress them; speaking well is the result, not the starting point.
Don't the four steps sound robotic?
At first, yes. The book admits it takes practice; with fluency the components internalise into natural expression, not a fill-in formula.
What if the other person won't play along?
NVC doesn't require them to. It starts with changing your own expression and listening; how they respond is their choice.
